Hello world. My name is Nick. Now, I don’t know if anyone will ever read this, but even so, I want to share parts of my life with the world. And I felt that putting my thoughts and experiences online would be a good start to that, so here I am.
I’m not that great of a writer, so I apologize for the inevitable poor grammar in advance. However, I don’t think it is so bad as to render my writing unreadable. I’m sure I’ll get better as I go.
Alright, so here we go. Something that I thought would be interesting for this blog would be to refrain from giving any sort of specifics about myself (besides my name of course), and instead allow the reader (you) to develop an image of me based on the experiences and stories I share. So, I think I’ll kind of go off of that thinking until something new comes along.
I’ll start this blog up with a basic “How’s my day been” sort of thing, so here’s the background. Basically, I’m an executive member of this organization at my university, and I was put in charge of advertising our organization at an on-going org fair this Summer.
For those who don’t know what an org fair is, it’s quite simple. It’s a university-ran event where organizations can sign up, set up a display at a table, show off awards, and recruit incoming Freshmen.
So yeah, that’s my job. The problem of this story is that I live 2 hours away from my university, and I am hella broke. It takes 15 gallons of gas to get to the university from my house and back, which ranges from $35-$45 depending on gas prices. Now, I signed up our organization for just one day out of the week: Sunday, so I thought, “Eh, 40 dollars a week is manageable.”
Here comes phase 2. We need a display. Fortunately, we already have some prepared! Yay! But it’s in our office on campus. Boo. So, I get in contact with the President of the organization. Now, our organization is a part of the Housing department at my university. The President informs me that I can get these materials from our office, but I need to check out a key to do so. To check out a key, I need to speak with a Housing adviser. Sounds simple enough.
On the first Sunday we are supposed to present at the org fair, I go to the building which contains the Housing adviser I need to speak with and our office. I go up to the doors, aaand they are locked. Not good. I message the President, and she tells me that Sunday wouldn’t work because the school is closed. In hindsight I should have known that, but I was trying to prevent the possibility of having to go to the campus twice in a week.
I suppose I should mention at this point that the Sunday this all went down was last Sunday, June 2nd. And that bring me to today. After some hesitance, I did eventually give into going to the school a second time in the week. The university only allows for one absence before you are removed from guaranteed access to the org fair, and instead put on a wait list. We used that one absence last Sunday, so we have to get all the materials before this upcoming Sunday, June 9th.
However, this time I did things a little differently. I got in direct contact with the Housing adviser via email. She told me her availability, and we set up a date… today… at 1 or 2 pm. I make the 2 hour drive and arrive at the scene at 12:00 o’clock, thinking that 1 hour of waiting wouldn’t be too bad. At most, I’d have to wait 2 hours.
1 hours passes, no sign of the adviser. 2 hours pass, nada. I start to worry that I spent another 40 dollars to drive to this building only to leave empty-handed, so I email the adviser. No response. 3 o’clock rolls around. I decide that I should inform the President of what’s happening. She then proceeds to worry because if we don’t get these materials we cannot go to the org fair and are wait listed. So, she then gives me the number to the adviser to message straight to her mobile device. I ask her if it would be possible if we could meet later on today. Another hour and a half goes by. It is now 4:30. She messages back explaining that she had a family emergency and wouldn’t be available until Monday. I explain to her that if we don’t get these supplies today, then we wouldn’t be able to attend the org fair. So, she calls me.
Long story short, I did manage to get these supplies. She tells me to go upstairs and see if anyone from the other housing organizations was around that could unlock the door. Fortunately, there was. Soon after, I got the materials and headed back to my hometown.
So that’s pretty much the gist of my entire day. I drove 2 hours, sat around for 5 hours waiting, and then drove another 2 hours. Riveting haha. The good news is that I now have the materials needed to go to the org fair in a couple of days, so all is well.
I think that will wrap it up for today. I don’t want this to get too lengthy. So, I hope you have a good day. I can tell I’m going to enjoy this. Signing off.
